Spring 2025
This support page will help connect you with the available support for MATH 108: Foundations of Data Science.
The Math Lab offers free MATH 108 tutoring in person and virtually through a team of professional teaching assistants and trained student tutors.
The Math Lab offers student services online, too! Self-enroll in the Online Math Lab canvas shell to access course-specific resources such as guided learning activities and to make a virtual appointment with our tutors. These resources include support for courses in Pre-Algebra, Beginning Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and Pre-statistics.
For more information about the Math Lab, contact Charles Hutchins, the Math Lab Coordinator, at 415-452-5575 or chutchin@ccsf.edu.
Data Ambassadors offer assignment support sessions through Zoom and in person. Additionally, they provide mentorship about studying Data Science beyond MATH 108 and the transfer process. These ambassadors consist of former community college students currently studying at UC Berkeley along with current CCSF students and staff. The weekly meeting details will be posted in the Canvas Calendar.
For questions or comments about this program, please contact Kseniya Usovich (k_usovich@berkeley.edu) or Shawn Wiggins (swiggins@ccsf.edu)
You can find all of the past exams and a few other publicly available resources on the DATA 8 course page.
For the past few years, students like you have collaborated to create and maintain a student-focused Discord channel. The original intention of the channel was to create a space just for students to work on the course material and connect over all things related to Data Science. You will find current students needing help and some other students offering help. Past students tend to drop by to volunteer their time to help you now and then. You might see some of the tutors stop by when their schedules allow. Our Math Lab tutor Ed Lee is the current channel administrator
As a MATH 108 student at CCSF, you have access to supplemental training on the DataCamp platform at no charge. Using your @mail.ccsf.edu Google account, join our group and participate anytime between January 9th and July 9th. The Data Science Coordinator at CCSF has set up a few "assignments" to help guide your learning toward some relevant career paths. Message Shawn Wiggins (swiggins@ccsf.edu), if you are having any issues accessing this benefit. Contact DataCamp directly if you are having any issues with their content or platform.
As you work on the assignments in this class, you may want to reference some of the following items:
The CCSF Computer Science department has a group of amazing student tutors focused on supporting CS courses. MATH 108 can sometimes feel like an introductory programming class, so you might find support through the students with coding in Python. Student tutors that have indicated the courses CS 10, CS 110A, CS 131B, and/or CS 231 on the Computer Science Tutor Squad website should be able to help you with the Python programming that we do, but you should keep in mind that they may not be familiar with the Data Science applications of our work and the Jupyter notebook format.
For more information about the Tutor Squad, visit or contact Jonathan Potter at jpotter@ccsf.edu.
Canvas is the learning management system used for MATH 108 and many other courses at CCSF. Here are some resources to help you navigate and use Canvas effectively:
City College offers many academic, financial, health, and support services to help you succeed here and beyond. Visit the Student Services page for the available resources.
If you find that a resource is missing or out of date, please message Shawn Wiggins (swiggins@ccsf.edu) with the details.
